How to install ER Mario

An early Windows mod that plays Elden Ring as Mario, using Super Mario 64 movement through libsm64 and the me3 loader. You supply a US Super Mario 64 ROM. The mod does not include Nintendo or FromSoftware assets. Follow the creator if a step here and the README disagree.

What it does

  • libsm64 runs Mario's physics and animation against Elden Ring's live Havok collision. The Tarnished stays in the world and follows Mario so doors, graces, menus, deaths, and saves keep working.
  • The README describes triple jumps, wall kicks, long jumps, ground pounds, punches and kicks that hurt enemies, Bowser-style tail swings on staggered bosses, Bob-omb style throws, the SM64 health meter, coins, and Lakitu's camera.
  • Hits take a fixed share of an enemy's max health. Strength, Dexterity, and weapons do not change that. Mario's health is the 8 SM64 wedges, not your Vigor.
  • Press F9 to switch between Lakitu's camera and Elden Ring's camera.

Your own US version. Mario's model, textures, sounds, animations, and menu icons are built from it on your PC the first time you play.

The README says it was tested with an Xbox One controller, a PS5 controller through Steam, and keyboard and mouse.

Install steps

  1. Install me3 from me3.help.
  2. Download ER-Mario-x.y.z.zip from the GitHub release assets and unzip it somewhere you can write to, such as Documents. This site does not host the zip or a ROM.
  3. Put your own US Super Mario 64 ROM in the ER-Mario folder.
  4. Start the game by double-clicking er-mario.me3. The first launch sets itself up from the ROM. When it says setup complete, press any button to close, then start er-mario.me3 again.
  5. Look for ER MARIO and the version in the bottom left of the title screen. The mod uses its own save. Stay offline. Never take this mod online.
  6. The README says streamers need window capture or display capture for the HUD to appear properly.

Before you touch a save

  • The author calls it a work in progress. Elevators can still clip, some boss ragdolls go wild, cutscenes can show a crumpled Mario with the Tarnished's head, and the shadow can flicker.
  • Stamina, FP, and equip load are not used. Leveling and items do not affect Mario's combat the way a normal Elden Ring build would.
  • me3 starts the game offline with anti-cheat off. Playing a modded Elden Ring online can put the account at risk. The README says never play this mod online.
